“Mr. Musk, what are you up to these days I’d like to ask?”
If that’s a question that ask yourself often, than guess what? We’re about to find out!
On August 12th, Elon Musk intends to reveal his plans for what a his version of a modern-day (or future-day) super high-speed public transportation system would look like.
The name of this system: Hyperloop.
I know, I know, you’re probably thinking, “Hyperloop?” And invariably you’re probably also asking with curiosity this question too: “What will the Hyperloop be like and well,….. just what IS a darn Hyperloop anyway?
According to Mr. Musk it’s this: a combination of “a concorde, a rail gun, and an air hockey table.” Oh yeah, and its also going to be solar powered! Rock on!!!
This was my response when I first read and heard about the Hyperloop.
“Ohhhh (meekly)……yeah that makes sense…..I think I get it…….wait, do I?……nope no not at all.”
All of my silly rambling aside though and in all seriousness, the Hyperloop is a project that Mr. Musk and his team plan to undertake in some capacity in the future. It’s just the latest in a long line of innovative and disruptive technological ideas that he’s dreamed up so far and I’ve got to say, I’m stoked to hear more about this idea in particular!
While there isn’t a whole lot known about the project, the goal of the system is clear: to revolutionize transportation. Reportedly, the Hyperloop will actually be able to get people from San Francisco to Los Angeles in 30 minutes, an absolutely amazing feat, given that the fastest passenger train in the world hits “only” a meager 360 kph.
Mr. Musk did however hint at a potential Hyperloop design these past few days when he received a tweet from someone guessing what it will look like. Just so you know, he responded to the tweeter thusly, “your guess is the closest I’ve seen anyone guess so far.” (You can check out that diagram here.) So perhaps that just might just be the best indication anyone will get right now for what the Hyperloop will look like.
It looks awesome!
On another note, if one does just take a minute to think about this, it kind of becomes clear that this could be the ultimate Musk grand plan of sorts because it would be the perfect culmination of all his major projects to-date into one masterful symphony of tech.
Consider this:
Both he and his team have been delving into transportation technologies the past few years via SpaceX and Tesla. Both of these projects are highly innovative and cutting edge and I’m sure they’ve given him insight into the future of the world in one way or another. He probaly also has a darn good idea for what a project of this magnitude would entail. Also, Mr. Musk is a major stakeholder in and Chairman of SolarCity, the fast growing and highly disruptive Solar energy company. This exposure to the solar industry has most likely given him valuable insight into how solar energy systems work on a large scale and how they could operate within the framework of a large scale transport system. And last but not least, PayPal’s system could easily handle all the payments of customers for the Hyperloop, which brings this whole idea full circle.
So it all adds up pretty nicely if you do the math……well kinda. You sort of have to fudge the numbers a little bit here and there……
Anywho, you best go get your game face on for Aug. 12th and prepare yourself to get stoked for the Hyperloop! It’s coming to a state near you.
